Her sixth-floor penthouse apartment was, like West, relatively small, and had two bedrooms, a tiny kitchen and some modest common rooms. It remained her primary residence for 48 years. Paramount had put West up at The Ravenswood, the studio’s art deco apartment hotel at 570 N. She stole the film - particularly thanks to a self-penned zinger, “Goodness had nothing to do with it, dearie” - and was instantly minted a superstar. But Paramount Studios had summoned her for a role in Night After Night.
Then 38, West had already conquered Broadway with a string of controversial hit plays like Sex and the gay-themed The Drag. Mae West arrived in Hollywood from her native Brooklyn on Jan. And just as there are varying understandings of the industry in general, one person’s idea of a fluffer could be vastly different from the reality of the actual job. From left: David Ray Johnson, Janet Lewis, James Farris, Patricia Pawlak and Jeff Redford, circa 1976. Depending on the person asked, they could be an antiquated role of the past or a still-active MVP. But that fantasy aside, there might never be an actual consensus on fluffers in the adult film industry. Adult film is built upon and sold as an alternative to real life, and the idea of a 24-hour "helping hand" could be a fantasy for some viewers. It's understandable why people might believe that fluffers are commonplace.

These days, Gross says, fluffers are still seen in porn - but only as actors playing roles in films, no different from someone portraying a taxi driver or a teacher.

He adds that the fluffers he saw were typically up-and-coming actors who were hired to help with the process and were often employed at the high-budget productions that became nearly extinct after the launch of free erotica sites. “There were brought onto productions to help the men maintain erections for the shoots.” “The last time I saw being used was maybe 15 years ago,” says Brian Scott Gross, president of BSG PR, an adult film publicity firm. Other industry professionals agree that role of the fluffer did exist but, for the most part, in a different era of adult film. She added that that she wasn't aware of fluffers that exist for women, just men - an indication that if the role does exist, it prescribes to the same patterns of patriarchy that permeate in the industry already. And I'm like, 'all right, I've never done it, so I'll do it,'" Skott recalled of her first experience in the role. asked me if I would come down and be a fluffer for the day. In 2012, performer and dancer Hunter Skott told Nerve that she'd worked as a fluffer, explaining that the job is only used for certain types of adult films involving multiple people. Yet the myth of the job's existence is far from an open-and-shut case. “It’s a myth." She tells Mic that while she's seen people engage sexually on set before their scenes, there is no established role of a fluffer. “They are not real,” claims adult actor Jesse Jane, laughing. “I don’t have an explanation other than the fact that they don’t exist and as far as I know they never did,” adds Joanna Angel, adult actor and head of the erotica site BurningAngel.
“I am not here to kill fantasies, dreams or limit the amount of online job forms filled out for this career, but there are no fluffers in the adult industry," says Lisa Ann, a 20-year veteran of adult film.

But having someone else warm up my partner, like the way a comic would warm up the audience before the taping of a TV show? I have never had this happen or known of this to happen.” "I have seen ‘stunt cocks’ who can jump into the scene for the final ‘money shot.’ I have had girlfriends who were on set jump in to help me with my group scene. “During all of my experience on sets, I have never, ever seen a fluffer," says Tanya Tate, an adult actor and model. The fluffer's responsibilities are commonly considered the ultimate in devalued grunt work - but according to some industry professionals, it's never been an actual job. The term - which is popular enough to have earned a spot on Urban Dictionary - is described as “a person in the adult entertainment industry whose job it is to give male porno stars blowjobs in order to get them ready to perform.” It’s an occupation that, over many years, has been the punchline of cheap jokes, or written into episodes of TV shows like Nip/Tuck and New Girl. One of the most hotly contested? Whether the occupation of the “fluffer" actually exists. On the other side of the spectrum, there’s a whole separate category of myths that even industry veterans and emerging actors alike cannot seem to agree on. From audiences thinking that an average penis length is ~12 inches, to the idea that every camera-friendly position should be imitated in real life, there is no shortage of unrealistic ideas that people manage to glean from porn. Adult film is a breeding ground for misinformation and half-truths.
